San Diego to hand out letter grades to food trucks

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Starting Tuesday food trucks will have to prove they are just as safe to eat at as restaurants by displaying a health rating letter grade.

Food trucks and carts will be rated on the scale of A, B, or C.

San Diego was one of the first counties in California to issue grades for restaurants. They will now be one of the first in the nation to grade food trucks.

Tuesday morning supervisor Ron Roberts will hand out the county's first letter grades. He wrote the ordinance last year.

The grades must be posted in the open so customers can see them clearly. The grades are given on a point scale from zero to 100. So to get an "A," a food truck will have to score a 90 or above.

Los Angeles County is the only other place in California that currently has the food truck grading program.
