Wounded warriors receive Segways

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - More than two dozen wounded warriors are now getting around easier, thanks to the use of Segways.

A disability rights organization presented the devices to severely wounded service members Wednesday on the flight deck of the USS Midway.

It's part of the Segs for Vets project aimed at improving mobility and providing independence not achieved by a wheelchair.

"To be able to do some things that you want to do, to go to the store, to go around the block and to run and go to the park with the kids, which are very hard to do. Yes, I do have my prosthetics but the Segway makes it so much easier," veteran Scott Schroeder said.

Each of the recipients sustained injuries in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
