SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego's oldest retired sheriff's deputy is celebrating a major milestone.
Retired Sheriff's Capt. Leland McPhie is turning 99 years old on Sunday. On Wednesday, the Sheriff's Museum in Old Town gave him a tribute birthday cake.
Capt. McPhie joined the department in 1940. He took 2 1/2 years off from his law enforcement career to serve in World War II.
McPhie is a graduate of San Diego State, and has some advice for new deputies.
"I would advise all of them to get as much education as they can," he said.
McPhie retired as a captain in 1968.
