Sinkhole in downtown causes street closure

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A large sinkhole and street closure in the downtown area may cause problems for commuters Friday morning.

Roads are closed between Elm and Grape streets, going northbound on 5th Ave. near Balboa Park.

San Diego police say they received a call around 2 a.m. about a sinkhole on 5th Ave. and Fir St.

Police say a taxi cab managed to get stuck inside the trench but with the help from police, the taxi cab driver was able to get out.

As of this update, repair crews are at the intersection of 5th Ave. and Fir St., assessing the damage. Steel plates were placed over the hole.

No injuries have been reported.
