In an effort to reverse a growing number of local pedestrian injuries and deaths, San Diego police Thursday launched a daylong enforcement sweep targeting violations on the part of people walking, jogging, bicycling and skateboarding on city streets.
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A total of 340 people were ticketed for jaywalking and engaging in other pedestrian misconduct on San Diego streets during a daylong enforcement effort targeting the hazardous violations, a police spokeswoman reported Friday.
The citywide crackdown, which ran from 7 a.m. to midnight Thursday, was an effort to reduce pedestrian deaths, which have increased markedly in recent years.
"It is the hope of the San Diego Police Department that continued projects of this type will reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities in the city, as well create a safer, more informed pedestrian public," SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.
Last month alone, six traffic deaths involving pedestrians occurred in San Diego. In all but one of the cases, the actions of the fatally injured person were found to have been primarily to blame, according to police.
Last year, 20 pedestrians died in local traffic accidents, six more than in 2011.
Of the citations issued during this week's enforcement sweep, 12 went to people riding bicycles, Brown said.
In addition to the hundreds of pedestrians cited, another 81 received verbal warnings only, the lieutenant said.
