LA MESA (CBS 8) - San Diego police arrested four people on drug charges Friday night following a short, at times high-speed chase along Interstate 8 that ended on a freeway off-ramp in La Mesa.

Officers with the Mid-City Crime Suppression Team had attempted to pull over the driver of a white Infiniti near El Cajon Boulevard around 6:30 p.m..

"They had some information that this vehicle might be involved in some narcotics trafficking or use," Lt. Paul Rorrison of the San Diego Police Dept.

Instead of stopping, the driver led police on a pursuit eastbound along I-8 during rush hour which at times topped 80 miles an hour. The driver finally got off the freeway at 70th and Alvarado in La Mesa, and violently spun out on the freeway off-ramp.

"All four occupants in the vehicle bailed out," Rorrison said.

With the help of the police copter above, officers on the ground were able to locate and chase after the four suspects, who ran in different directions.

One officer, pursuing two of the suspects down an embankment leading to trolley tracks, lost his footing and hit his head on a metal guard rail.

"He has a possible fractured hand and a head injury, scrapes and abrasions," Rorrison told News 8.

That officer was taken to Scripps Mercy for treatment.

Ultimately, all four suspects were captured and taken into custody.

Meanwhile, authorities say they found meth, a firearm and drug paraphernalia, including a crack pipe in the abandoned vehicle.

Along with narcotics charges, the four suspects also face additional charges of felony evading and failure to yield.
