Gun buyback event held in Chula Vista

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - While some flocked to the gun show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, others were exchanging their guns for gift cards in Chula Vista.

Saturday's gun buyback event in the parking lot of the South Bay courthouse was organized by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, the Chula Vista Police Department, the National City Police Department and the Sheriff's Department.

A $50 gift card was given for each regular weapon. An assault weapon was worth a $100 gift card.

Organizers say they wanted to make it easy for people to safely get rid of their weapons.

"Going through a process of trying to sell the weapon and having to go through a firearms dealer. You know, there's some cost involved in doing that too," said Undersheriff Ed Prendergast. "So I think the folks that are coming down here today are just honest folks who just want to make sure these don't fall into the wrong hands."

Authorities say they collected nearly 100 weapons, including a rocket launcher during Saturday's gun buyback event.
