SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Stargazers gathered on Mount Soledad to see a comet pass within 100 million miles of earth.

The comet was visible just above the western horizon, right next to the crescent moon Tuesday night.

"You see it out there in the vastness of the sky. It's just a once in a lifetime opportunity. It's pretty cool," said Theresa Walker.

PanSTARRS should be visible over the next week.

It's making its first ever trip through the inner solar system and passed within 20 million miles of the sun on Sunday.
