Power restored in central San Diego after early morning blackout

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A blackout caused by a traffic accident cut off power to thousands of homes and businesses in neighborhoods surrounding Lindbergh Field early Friday.

The outage began shortly after 4 a.m., when an out-of-control car struck a power pole at Pringle Street and San Diego Avenue, authorities said.

The problem initially affected nearly 2,400 addresses in Hillcrest, the Midway District, Mission Hills, Ocean Beach and Old Town, San Diego Gas & Electric reported. The bayside international airport was not affected, according to the utility.

Crews were able to restore service to all but 486 addresses within a few minutes, and had more than three hundred others on line again as of 6:30 a.m., SDG&E spokeswoman Gina Jacobs.

Power was back on in all affected areas by shortly before 12:30 p.m., she said.
