Sentencing in Escondido police chase and DUI case

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CNS) - A young man who pleaded guilty to fleeing from police and crashing a stolen car in Escondido, seriously injuring a passenger, was scheduled to be sentenced Monday.

Giovanni Sanchez, 19, pleaded guilty to felony evading a peace officer causing serious injury, felony evading a peace officer with disregard for safety, felony vehicle theft and misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in connection with the Jan. 9 pursuit, according to Sheriff's Department's online jail records.

An Escondido police sergeant spotted Sanchez allegedly lurking suspiciously around a small auto dealership at Ivy Street and East Valley Parkway around 1:45 a.m. Jan. 9. Seeing the sergeant's police cruiser, the defendant jumped behind the wheel of a parked silver Chevrolet Malibu occupied by another man and sped off, Escondido police said.

A pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of 60-70 miles per hour. A short time later, Sanchez lost control of the Malibu near Escondido Promenade mall, sending the car careening into a pole supporting a red-light camera.

The Malibu became airborne, overturned and landed upside down on the roadside, trapping Sanchez and his passenger inside, police said.

Paramedics took Sanchez to a hospital, where he was treated and released the same day, then booked into jail. His passenger suffered serious injuries but did not face any charges.

Police later learned the Malibu had been stolen hours earlier.
