Curriculum lost to budget cuts may get boost from tournament fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A golf tournament is scheduled Monday to raise funds to restore fourth-grade field trips to Old Town, which fell victim to San Diego Unified School District budget cuts at the end of the 2010-11 school year.

The Cafe Coyote Historic Old Town Golf Classic is set for noon at the Salt Creek Golf Club.

Old Town visits were a staple of the fourth-grade curriculum for four decades. Students learned about the history of San Diego and other cultures during the field trips, which were part of an integrated program of off-campus activities called "OCILE" designed to familiarize students with youth from other backgrounds.

Organizers of the fundraiser hope to use the revenues to pay for student transportation on buses beginning in the next school year. A pilot program is currently under way, involving Holmes and Wegeforth elementary schools.

The tournament will be hosted by the Old Town Chamber of Commerce.
