Special mass for family injured in SR-52 crash

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A special mass took place Tuesday for a local mom and her daughters injured in a head on crash on State Route 52.

Family and friends of a local basketball coach gathered to say prayers for his wife, and three daughters, all victims of a head on crash involving a wrong way driver.

About 2,000 people gathered for a special prayer service inside the campus gym. They prayed for the recovery for the wife and three daughters of Cathedral Catholic basketball coach Will Cunningham.

"We are really saddened as a community for cathedral catholic high school," said school spokeswoman Kimberly King.

Will's wife Alisa, and their three children, including 17-year-old Taylor, a student at the school and reigning Miss San Diego Outstanding Teen, were driving along the 52 past Santo Road Sunday night, when Matthew Leonardo slammed into their minivan.

Leonardo died at the scene.

"I swerved out of the way and honked a couple times, and then I heard it hit the car behind me and I saw it in my rearview mirror," said a witness.

Taylor, who suffered the most severe injuries, is now in surgery to monitor brain pressure.

Staff members at Cathedral Catholic High have also been posting updates on their Facebook page, one saying -- "Our dons family is strong today and asks for God's strength and healing to be with the Cunninghams."

"The whole family has just been deep in our prayers," said King.
