$1,000 reward offered for tips in Oceanside teen murders

Posted: Updated:

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Detectives planned to pass out flyers at Libby Lake Park and nearby neighborhoods Wednesday night in hopes of generating leads in a week-old shooting that left two teens dead and another two hospitalized.

Edgar Sanchez, 15, and 13-year-old Melanie Virgen were mortally wounded at the northern Oceanside open-space recreation area shortly before 9 p.m. last Wednesday. They died at the scene.

An 18-year-old victim remained in a trauma center in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, while one of his companions on the night of the shooting, a 17-year-old boy, was released from medical care this week.

"No further information about the victims is being released, as this is an ongoing sensitive criminal investigation," Lt. Aaron Doyle said.

Authorities have released no suspected motive for the shooting.

Immediately following the gunfire -- which erupted near a makeshift memorial for a teenage couple killed two years ago in a gang assault at the park -- witnesses saw several men or teenage boys in dark clothing fleeing in a gray or silver 2005 or 2006 Toyota Tacoma or Tundra extended-cab pickup truck.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
