PUC rejects San Diego power plant contracts

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — State regulators have refused to allow a San Diego utility to buy power from two proposed electrical plants — harming their chances of being built.

City News Service says San Diego Gas & Electric was turned down Thursday by the California Utilities Commission.

The contracts would have cost SDG&E customers more than $1.5 billion over 20 years.

The commissioners cited evidence that the plants wouldn't be needed until at least 2018.

San Diego Gas & Electric says it's disappointed by the decision. However, the utility can try again by submitting amended contracts.
