Trial for man charged with shooting Calif deputies

A suspect in a child molestation case who is charged in a gun battle that seriously wounded two Southern California sheriff's deputies has been ordered to stand trial.

EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) — A suspect in a child molestation case who is charged in a gun battle that seriously wounded two Southern California sheriff's deputies has been ordered to stand trial.

City News Service reports a judge in El Cajon on Thursday ruled that there's enough evidence to try Daniel Witczak on charges of attempted murder and child molestation.

The 30-year-old was wounded in a September shootout after San Diego County deputies went to his Lakeside apartment to investigate allegations that he molested his girlfriend's 6- and 8-year-old daughters.

Two deputies who were wounded in the gun battle are recovering.

At Thursday's hearing, Detective Ali Perez testified that he was shot in the torso with a rifle, saw a vision of Jesus and prepared himself for death. He says Jesus told him to bless Witczak.

Witczak faces 190 years to life in prison if convicted.
