NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - No name was released early Sunday for the 43-year-old man who was shot near a National City shopping center and died in a hospital a short time later.

Workers at the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office were still working to identify the man and notify his family.

He was shot about 5:30 p.m. Saturday at 1502 Sweetwater Road, according to officials with the Medical Examiner's Office.

National City police Sgt. Robert Rounds told U-T San Diego the gunman likely fired a semi-automatic rifle 10 to 15 times and the victim was shot from about 10-15 feet away.

The newspaper reported the suspect, described as a Hispanic man in a black hooded jacket, drove away in 70s or 80s orange and white pickup truck with a distinctive front grill.

The victim was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center where he was declared dead at 6:21 p.m., according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
