Escondido student to represent San Diego in national spelling bee

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A student from Heritage K-8 Charter in Escondido will represent San Diego County in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Giabao Tonthat won the 44th annual U-T San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee Wednesday. Tonthat correctly spelled "bonspiel" to win the competition.

Wednesday's contest included 107 seventh and eighth graders from throughout San Diego County.

"The Spelling Bee is one of the most time-honored of all academic competitions," said Nicole Shina, who coordinates the Spelling Bee for the San Diego County Office of Education.  "It's a nice reminder that even in a world where we're all texting and tweeting, spelling is important."

Last year, San Diego student Snighda Nandipati took home the top trophy. In 2005, local student Anurag Kashyap won the national competition.
