Search for gunman who opened fire near Belmont Park

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A busy Mission Beach street on Easter weekend turned into a chaotic scene as San Diego police continue to search for the gunman.

The shooting happened near the famous Giant Dipper roller coaster Saturday night.

Police say a fight broke out between two groups of people, and one man opened fire as innocent beach goers were caught in the middle.

"We were all just walking...as soon as we heard the gunshots we hid underneath the tables," a witness said.

It was just around 8 p.m. Saturday on the 700 block of Ventura Place, right across the street from the Giant Dipper roller coaster in Mission Beach.

"Initial reports are that there was a disturbance and a fight between two groups of individuals, at one point one person was knocked down, three subjects began to flee the scene," said Lt. Paul Rorrison.

At that point, the man that was knocked down pulled out a handgun and began firing two rounds.

"I thought it was firecrackers, it didn't really sound like a gunshot everyone started running," said a witness.

Amazingly, with all of those people in the mix no one got hurt.

"That's pretty horrifying, we walked to dinner last night and if we would have walked there's a pretty good chance we could have been in the line of fire," a witness said.

For business owners like Mike Soltan it's the last thing they expected.

"It was like so crazy busy down here," he said.

After a slow Winter, many local businesses were counting on Easter weekend to kick off their busy season.

It's still not known what the argument was about that lead to the shooting.

The suspect, still wanted, is described as a Hispanic male, in his 20s. He was last seen leaving this area in a white Ford Mustang.
