April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The California Highway Patrol is kicking off National Distracted Driving Awareness Month with a week devoted to distracted teen drivers.

On Tuesday, the CHP hosted a news conference with members of the Office of Traffic Safety at Grossmont High School.

This is the third annual awareness and enforcement campaign against distracted driving. Last April, the CHP issued over 1,000 citations.

"Twenty-two percent of all crashes in California are caused by distracted drivers. And as we mentioned earlier, they can all be avoided," CHP Border Division Chief Jim Abele said.

A distracted driving ticket costs a minimum of $159.
