SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A suicidal San Marcos woman deliberately drove the wrong way on Highway 78 and caused a head-on crash that killed herself and the other driver, authorities said.

Yi Liu, 48, suffered from depression and committed suicide early Monday morning on eastbound Highway 78, near San Marcos Boulevard, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Liu drove her 1997 Nissan Maxima head on into a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser around 3 a.m., the Medical Examiner's Office reported. The driver of the PT Cruiser was identified as Maria Guadalupe Vargas Lopez, 38, of Escondido.

Both drivers were pronounced dead upon arrival at Palomar Medical Center, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

At the time of the crash, Vargas Lopez, a single mother, was delivering newspapers for U-T San Diego. She was an independent contractor who had just picked up her load of newspapers at a distribution center in San Marcos, U-T San Diego reported.
