CARLSBAD (CNS) - The silver medalist in the 1,500-meter run at the Olympics last year is scheduled to race in the 28th annual Carlsbad 5000 Sunday.

Leo Manzano, a Texan who immigrated from Mexico as a child, will make his road racing debut at the event, which is touted as the "World's Fastest 5K."

Manzano will run in the men's elite race, which is set to step off around 12:45 p.m. His biggest competition will come from Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia, who will try to become the first man to win the race three times.

The women's elite runners will start a couple of minutes after the men, featuring two time Olympian Shannon Rowbury of San Francisco. She was a runner-up in the Carlsbad 5000 four years ago.

About 10,000 runners in various age categories are scheduled to take part, with racing scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Streets through the Carlsbad Village area will be closed, according to the city.
