ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - One woman is dead and her friend hurt Monday after the two were hit by a car in Encinitas.

It happened in the 2600 block of South Coast Highway 101 around 8 p.m. Sunday.

A witness says he saw two women sitting on the side of the road, when one of them darted across the street while the other tried to stop her.

A white Toyota hit them both.

"And I never seen anything like it before," said Blue Gist. "She deer headed it. She fell forward into the car and the car hit her, and her friend let go and the car clipped her, and I ran over there and she wasn't moving."

The victim is a 43-year-old woman. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her 24-year-old friend declined treatment for her injuries.

The Toyota driver is not facing charges. It's not clear if alcohol was a factor.
