Groovy Records: In the groove

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Veteran cosmic rockers and hip jazz lovers can get their grooves back at a retro record shop in Hillcrest.

Wedged into the corner of Park Boulevard and Robinson, like a piece of American pop pie, Groovy Records offers a rare opportunity to reclaim your soul.

"In a way I'm an old soul, and old souls will naturally live on forever," Steve Kader said.

Steve is the curator of this final vestige of vinyl.

"It takes you back to a time and place in your life. A lot of people remember the first time you bought a 45 or you bought an LP," he said. "It's rekindling a relationship with an old friend. Memories come back."

At Groovy Records, you'll find eclectic things like a Taiwanese edition of the first Led Zeppelin album, or something as memorable as the Beatles White LP. Steve keeps some of his all-time classics behind the counter.

"Here's the recently reunited for the last few years, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, who's a pioneer of punk rock, Dick Dale, king of the surf guitar, you've got local legend Jack Mr. Bongo Constanza, who's still playing," Steve said.

What hasn't been played lately is the handful of 8-tracks you'll find for sale at Groovy Records.

"There's a little bit of vinyl here for everybody," Steve said.

Reuniting folks with their memories is only half the fun for Steve Kader.

"Another good feeling is when you put a piece of music on in a shop and immediately in about 5 or 10 minutes, someone makes a beeline for the counter or the turntable and says, 'What is that? Tell me more about the band,'" he said.

And this old soul knows his music.

"We'll I've been the talent buyer for the Adams Avenue Street Festival, which takes place the last week in September. This will be my eighth year," he said.

Like old souls, old vinyl never dies. It just hands around Groovy Records waiting to reclaim the spirit that lives inside all of us. Here, good times will always be remembered inside the tiny pie-shaped shop that never stops rockin'.
