Nightmare commute along NB I-15 makes for a rough start to the weekend

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A dump truck overturned and spilled gravel across northbound Interstate 15 in Scripps Ranch Friday afternoon, causing major traffic delays.

A semi-truck, carrying gravel, apparently slammed into a guard rail and landed on its side, spilling gravel across the highway around 2:00 p.m. near Scripps Poway Parkway.

"(The driver) apparently felt his trailer got a little loose behind him," CHP Officer Ryan Duran told News 8. "He diverted his attention to the rear view mirror, and didn't realize he had traveled off the roadway and he struck the attenuator."

Following the accident, authorities immediately issue a SigAlert. Several lanes were shut down for hours as crews worked to clean up the mess. During that time, the CHP opened both HOV lanes to regular traffic to help ease the back up.

According to Chopper 8 live reports at 5 p.m., traffic on northbound Interstate 15 was backed up to Interstate 8. As of 6:30 p.m. Friday, crews were in the clean up stages of the accident. Traffic was still backed up to Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, according to Chopper 8 live reports.

"It was horrible, actually bumper to bumper all the way up from the 52," one commuter told News 8.  "Just take it easy and go slow."

"The stress of the traffic... you can feel everyone else stressed out," another driver, Katherine Miranda said. "It was a nightmare."

The driver of the overturned truck initially complained of back pain, but later refused any medical attention, according to the CHP.

Some of the footage in this video story was shot using a GoPro camera.
