Fundraiser held in honor of crash victim

ALPINE (CBS 8) - What's being called a "fun"-raiser for Mothers Against Drunk Driving was held Sunday in Alpine.

It was organized by the mother of Angela August, who was involved in a deadly drunk driving crash along Interstate 8 last year.

Angela and a good Samaritan were both killed.

The driver who slammed into them, 30-year-old Sunny Hall was arrested. Her blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.

Angela would have been celebrating her 26th birthday this month, instead her mother Dawn August along with the rest of her family is mourning her loss and waiting for justice.

Angela was killed in June, just five days before she was suppose to graduate from UCSD with honors.

Authorities say, Angela lost control of her car along Interstate 8 near Alpine, causing it to overturn.

Jimmy Arevalo, 54, pulled over to help. While he was on the phone with 911, Sunny Hall plowed into them.

In December, autopsy reports revealed Angela had a blood alcohol level one and a half times the legal limit 0.12.

Angela's family knows they can't bring her back, so they organized a fundraiser at the Alpine Woman's Club in her honor and filled it with things Angela loved.

There was an on stage dance performances, arts and crafts, a petting zoo and pogo demonstrations done by Angela's boyfriend.

All proceeds go to MADD, a non profit dedicated to supporting drunk driving victims and their families.

Meanwhile, Dawn August has this message for everyone:

"Don't take anything for granted. You don't know when your loved ones won't be here any more," she said. "And don't get behind the wheel after drinking... that's my message."

Sunny Hall has been out on bail. Her preliminary hearing is set for April 23rd. She faces 14 years in prison if convicted.
