Man alleges beating at California border crossing

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego man says he was beaten unconscious at the nation's busiest border crossing while entering the country from Tijuana, Mexico.

Francisco Antonio Gonzalez appeared at a news conference Monday to display stiches on his left eyelid and chin and a broken thumb. He says he was struck from behind when walking across the border at the San Ysidro port of entry Saturday morning.

The 35-year-old says he was hit after challenging a Customs and Border Protection officer who told him to move to another lane.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque confirms that an ambulance went to the port of entry around that time to take a man to the hospital for head injuries. Customs and Border Protection declines to comment on the case.
