National Stress-Out Day helps college students

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Tuesday is National Stress-Out Day, and the Rancho Coastal Humane Society is getting into the action, taking service dogs to Palomar College to help stressed-out students.

The day is primarily aimed at college students to calm their nerves during midterms and raise awareness of anxiety disorders. Studies show petting a dog or a cat relieves stress.

"Kind of gives you this sense of overall peacefulness. Particularly for the college kids here, it helps increase your memory and it helps them to retain information better. At this point in the semester, they couldn't ask for anything more," John Van Zante of the Rancho Coastal Humane Society said.

Tuesday is the seventh annual National Stress-Out Day. It's sponsored by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
