SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 25-year-old man was in custody Wednesday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his stepfather during a fight at a Spring Valley home, authorities said.

Deputies received a report of a domestic disturbance at 8600 Tyler Street just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to a San Diego County sheriff's spokeswoman. Once there, they learned a stepfather and son had fought and the stepfather was stabbed, she said.

Paramedics took the wounded man, identified as Ervin Harris, 40, to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he died a short time later, sheriff's homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.

The suspect, Thomas Guss, fled before deputies arrived, the spokeswoman said.

Guss was arrested near the scene of the slaying this morning and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The motive for the stabbing is unknown at this time.
