Big rig loses 2,000 pounds of wood on downtown roadway

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Crews are cleaning up a big mess Thursday after over 2,000 pounds of wood spilled onto an offramp downtown.

It happened around 8 a.m. on the Ash Street offramp off southbound state Route 163. According to the California Highway Patrol, the pallets crashed through a rear door of a tractor trailer. The load was being delivered to a grocery store in the downtown area.

Officers believe a load shift caused the doors to fail, sending over a ton of wood falling onto the roadway.

There were no injuries reported, and no reports of damage to other vehicles.

"(The load) just rolled out and landed on the offramp. We were very fortunate there were no vehicles driving behind that tractor trailer, they definitely would have been crushed," CHP Sgt. Dan Kyle said.

As of early Thursday afternoon, Cal Trans crews were working on gathering the wood for removal from the offramp.

The cleanup was expected to take several hours.
