Los Angeles settles with women fired on in manhunt

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Attorneys on both sides say a $4.2 million settlement is fair for a mother and daughter who were injured when police mistakenly fired on them in the frantic manhunt for disgruntled ex-cop Christopher Dorner.

Margie Carranza and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were delivering papers around 5 a.m. on Feb. 7 when LAPD officers blasted at least 100 rounds at their pickup.

The settlement means they cannot pursue any future injury claims against the city.

An attorney for the women say the deal spares the city from defending a case that would likely have cost millions of dollars. Attorney Glen Jonas said he negotiated with City Attorney Carmen Trutanich for weeks before the deal was reached on Monday night.

Trutanich said in a statement he was pleased by how swiftly the settlement was reached. The agreement must still be approved by the Los Angeles City Council.
