I Love a Clean San Diego Creek to Bay Cleanup this Saturday

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - No one likes to see litter on the beach, a hiking trail or in a park. Pollution also poses a threat to our health and the wellbeing of our ecosystems.

Earth Week is the perfect time to help restore this beautiful place we call home, and it's not too late to get involved.

I Love a Clean San Diego Executive Director Pauline Martinson is scoping out Maple Canyon, one of 90 countywide restoration sites in this Saturday's Creek to Bay Cleanup.

"Our volunteers are asking you to come out and help remove these items before they make their way down to beaches and bays," she said.

More than 6,000 San Diegans are expected to roll up their sleeves, grab a trash picker and head to their favorite coastal or inland site to help restore and beautify our local habitats.

"Painting out park benches, removing graffiti and pulling out non-native species," Martinson said.

Creek to Bay Cleanup sites will encompass our country's 11 watersheds, which all drain toward the Pacific Ocean.

"Inland and creek to bay cleanups are really important, they play a major role in keeping pollution out of our rivers and therefore out of our bays and oceans," Birch Aquarium Executive Director Nigella Hillgarth said.

Local and state budget cuts also threaten the health of our ecosystems. Martinson says Creek to Bay will help replenish a bit of economic greenery.

"There's just not enough money, manpower to remove all the debris, so we really need the community to come help as well," she said. "That's what it's all about, coming out, everyone doing their part to be environmental stewards and help preserve San Diego."

You can join News 8 at Grant Hill Park this Saturday, or choose from 90 other sites countywide, beginning at 9 a.m.
