ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) – An Escondido man is being charged with murder after a shooting in Escondido Wednesday night.

The shooting happened in the 600 block of McDonald Lane around 8:30 p.m.

Several emotional family members of the victim, whom they identified as 36-year-old Brandon Sanchez, arrived at the crime scene demanding answers.

Mike Hemphill, 55, was taken into custody at the Escondido property late Wednesday night. Sanchez helped take care of the plants there, and was also in charge of collecting rent. He was reportedly shot when he attempted to collect rent from Hemphill.

Brandon's mother Maria Sanchez says she's not surprised to hear who police arrested for the crime.

"He's an ugly mean person. I hope he stays in prison so he won't come out and hurt anybody else."

The victim's sister Angelique Sanchez told News 8 she had a feeling her brother was in danger and repeatedly shouted to police to tell her where Hemphill was being held so she could confront him.

"I'm going to kill him. Wouldn't you kill someone who hurt your brother? I'm going to kill him," Angelique Sanchez said, referring to the suspected shooter.

According to family members, Brandon and Mike met years ago at the county jail. After getting his life together, Brandon reportedly tried to help Hemphill do the same.
