SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman suspected of stabbing her 9-year-old son and who raised a large kitchen knife above her head and charged at a San Diego Police Department officer, was shot to death by the officer early Saturday, a police lieutenant said.

The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was also suspected of striking her 15-year-old son in the head with a vase and stabbing the children's father, San Diego police Lt. Jorge Duran said.

Officers dispatched at 12:12 a.m. to the 6800 block of Quebec Court on several 911 calls located the injured children, one suffering from several stab wounds and the other from head trauma. Paramedics took them to Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Duran said.

"As officers checked the area for the suspect, they were flagged down by a male also suffering from stab wounds," Duran said. "The male told officers that his girlfriend was acting irrationally and had stabbed him and their children."

Paramedics took the man to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Duran said.

Other 911 callers reported that the woman was in the parking lot, still armed with the knife and threatening other residents. One responding officer found the woman in the parking lot, threatening two males who were attempting to calm her down, Duran said.

The officer ordered her several times to drop the knife. The woman refused and raised the knife above her head and charged at the officer, Duran said.

Duran said the officer feared he would be assaulted and fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect. She died at the scene.

Police did not release the name of the officer, but said he was a five-year San Diego Police Department veteran.
