Door between U.S. and Mexico opens for first time

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It was a historic day at Border Field State Park where the door between the U.S. and Mexico was opened for the first time.

During the few minutes the door was opened, a father living here in the U.S. was able to hold his five-year-old daughter living in Mexico for the first time.

Border activists convinced the Border Patrol to open the door to commemorate Children's Day, which is celebrated across Latin America.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner was there, in support of the event.

"We got to work together. We got to build bridges and not walls and that's why we're here today," said San Diego Mayor Bob Filner.

Border Field State Park was dedicated in the 1970's by then first lady Patricia Nixon as a symbol of goodwill between the U.S. and Mexico.
