Sinkhole in San Ysidro patched up after water main break

SAN YSIDRO (CBS 8) – A broken water main in San Ysidro has been repaired after the discovery of a huge sinkhole in the middle of the street Monday.

The water from the ruptured 6-inch-diameter concrete pipeline began inundating the 200 block of West San Ysidro Boulevard about 4 p.m. Monday, according to the San Diego Water Department.

The flooding continued for several hours, as crews worked to determine which shutoff gate controlled the flow to the failed main, the department's Arian Collins said.

"There's a gas line, fiber optics, on top of water main, so we can't get to the actual water main until that's dealt with," he said.

The hole was filled temporarily to keep anyone from falling in. Water service was temporarily diverted around the broken main so service in the area should be working.

A 24-year-old motorcyclist riding on West San Ysidro Boulevard told News 8 he hit the sinkhole Monday while riding his motorcycle.

Ron Gonzalez says it caused him to bounce up then back down, but he was able to maintain control of his bike and pulled off to the side of the road.

He received medical attention for pain in his back and was taken to the hospital. He says there was no water coming out of the road when he hit the sinkhole, which was the size of a large pothole at the time.

No structural flooding was reported.
