Emotional vigil for Linda Vista teen stabbing victim

Posted: Updated:

LINDA VISTA (CBS 8) - Friends of 19 year old Richi Knight held an emotional vigil Wednesday evening at the Linda Vista Recreation Center, where a stabbing last week ended his life.

"I just remember holding his head, and just telling him don't go," said Miranda Quintero, who organized the candlelight vigil and prayer circle. She was with Knight as he took his last conscious breaths last Thursday after being stabbed. Victoria Velasquez, who tried to put pressure on his wounds, told News8, "He got stabbed 3 times… two in his heart, one in his back."

Wearing shirts with the tribute "Forever in Our Hearts", Knight's close friends prayed for the young man with an infectious smile, who loved to make people laugh. Knight was a star basketball player at Kearny High School. He graduated last year, and was attending Mesa Community College. Friends say he was talented and he loved to sing.

Jeremy Robinson was Knight's Youth Pastor. He said, "Richi wanted all of his friends to know God. That's why he continued to hang around, and say come hoop with me." He said  Knight's mom made sure he attended church every Sunday, and told News 8, "He would lead for our children's church. He would lead my son, who's 6 years old. He would lead bible studies for 6 year olds and 5 year olds, every Sunday faithfully."

But Last Thursday afternoon, Knight sustained injuries that would end his life at the rec center he loved so much.  Pastor Robinson told News 8, "He was coming to play basketball with his friends... he was not looking for trouble, but ran into it."

On Tuesday night, News 8 was the only crew on scene when the 17 year old murder suspect was arrested by San Diego police. Friends believe Knight was trying to help a friend when he was attacked. Chloe Roston told News 8, "He's not the type to fight, he'll talk things out. He's a real good guy."

The suspect has been booked into Juvenile Hall. No word on whether or not he will be charged with murder as a juvenile or an adult.
