County's fastest prepster coached by mom

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The fastest high school sprinter in San Diego County has been coached by the same person for his entire life -- his mom.

One reason for Nehemiah Brown's success is his sheer number of reps.

"I've had Nehemiah run ever since he was 3 1/2 years old," mother Renethia said.

A standout in football, where he was also coached by his mom because she is the runningbacks coach at Valhalla, Nehemiah is headed to West Point. He's following in his mother's military footsteps, as she is a Marine.

"It's a good decision," Renethia said.

"My dad always told me it's not about getting there and staying there and once there what you're gonna do after that. The military is gonna set a foundation for the rest of my life," Nehemiah said.

He says he plans to be a career Army man.

"I plan on doing that for 20 years, retire and the do something else," he said.

"Like coach," Renethia added.

Nehemiah is the youngest of seven kids, and for the last two-plus decades, mom has always had at least one of her kids in her program.

"He's my baby. I'm softer on him," Renethia said.

"My brother and sister say I'm spoiled. I don't believe it," Nehemiah said.

Renethia is proud Nehemiah holds the best time in the 100 meter dash.

"I'm proud. He can do better -- his time is not where it should be. He can do better," she said.

That shows mom knows best.
