SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Some low-income families in San Diego will soon enjoy free solar panels that will power their homes and save them a lot of money.
Mayor Bob Filner announced a new partnership Thursday between Sullivan Solar Power and the nonprofit organization Grid Alternatives.
For every local homeowner that goes solar with Sullivan Solar Power, the company will donate a solar panel to Grid Alternatives, which will install the solar power system for a low-income family.
Jimmie Martin got a free solar panel installed on his Broadway Heights home Thursday.
"I'm very excited when you're saving the amount of money over a 30-year period like the mayor was talking about. $30,000-plus, that's great. That's great news. I love that," Martin said.
Some 50 low-income families are expected to receive free solar power systems through this new partnership.
