$50K reward posted in deadly La Mesa freeway shooting

Posted: Updated:

LA MESA (CNS) - Authorities announced a $50,000 reward Monday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for an apparently gang-related car-to-car shooting that killed one young man and wounded another on an East County freeway over the weekend.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday, several people made 911 calls about a Nissan Maxima on its side and a man lying in the roadway on Interstate 8, near State Route 125 in La Mesa. A few minutes later, a staffer at Sharp Grossmont Hospital reported that two men suffering from gunshots had just arrived there, police Capt. David Bond said.

One of the victims, 22-year-old Xusha Brown Jr. of El Cajon, died of a head wound at Sharp Memorial Hospital about 14 hours later. The other, 21-year-old Malcolm Hune of San Diego, remains hospitalized in stable condition at the same trauma city, where he is being treated for an arm injury, according to Bond.

Brown had been a passenger in the eastbound Maxima and Hune the driver at the time of the gunfire.

Based on witness statements and other evidence, investigators believe the shooting was not random, but rather related to gang activity, the captain said. Police had no descriptions of the perpetrators, but said the gunshots apparently came from inside an eastbound silver or light-gray sedan.

The reward was put up by the Sycuan Tribe of Mission Indians, of which Brown was a member.

"The senseless murder of young Xusha Brown Jr. offends the conscience," Sycuan Chairman Daniel Tucker said. "Our tribe is committed to doing whatever we can to help apprehend and convict the person or person responsible for this terrible crime."

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477, or email the agency at sdcrimestoppers.com. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
