SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A special fundraiser was held on the campus of UCSD to raise money for physically challenged athletes.

The swim-a-thon, held Saturday, will benefit "Swim With Mike." A foundation that provides financial resources that lets injured athletes overcome their obstacles and realize their full potential.

Among those taking part in the event was Patrick Ivison and his trusted friend, Ricochet the surf dog.

Patrick suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident that left him a quadriplegic when he was only 14 months old.

But thanks to his "surf-ice" dog, Patrick is able to surf and stay physically active.

"Today, we wanted to get some more attention and raise more money for Swim With Mike. So we're like .. Why not swim together? You know, we surf," said Ivison.

Since "Swim With Mike" was founded 33 years ago, the foundation has raised more than $13 million.
