Looking better, feeling good

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - When Marta Hoyt was diagnosed with cancer, she was in shock.

"Never would I have suspected that it would happen," Marta said.

Hairdresser and wig expert Cathy Ketchum has dealt with cancer victims for over 20 years.

"Usually when women are told that they have cancer, they don't hear cancer. They hear 'bald,'" Cathy said.

Just as Marta began chemotherapy and started losing her hair, she met Cathy, who fit her for a wig.

"It was the difference between staying home by myself and not doing anything, and participating in life again," she said.

"It's a proven fact that if they look like they did before they got the bad news and their hair started coming out, they get better faster," Cathy said.

There's just one problem. Some insurance companies won't pay for wigs for cancer patients, and natural-looking human hair wigs start at $1000 and go up from there. So Cathy and her son Tim started the Look Better Feel Good Foundation.

"The foundation is set up so when their insurance company won't help them purchase a wig, the foundation can pick it up from there," Cathy said.

And that's not all cancer patients are given.

"My mom, who is a cancer survivor -- she's 88 -- makes every one of my chemotherapy patients an afghan," Cathy explained.

Brenda Marshall is another of Cathy's clients. A disease called alopecia universalis has left her totally and permanently hairless.

"With Cathy's expertise, I can get a product that is comfortable. People ask me all the time, 'Isn't it itchy? Isn't it hot? And I am always comfortable. I felt like I looked good and I could tell I looked better because people asked me where I got my hair done. It was amazing," Brenda said.

The Look Better Feel Good Foundation is asking for volunteers and funds to help give women the outer beauty that provides the inner strength to live and fight on.
