Teen rescued from Otay Lakes dam dies in hospital

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A 16-year-old girl who was rescued from the base of a dam at Otay Lakes County Park has died.

Sheriff's deputies believe she may have been reported as a runaway from Chula Vista.

Two hikers discovered her lying in water at the base of the Upper Otay Lakes Dam at 5:53 p.m. Monday.

When emergency crews arrived, they reported she had several injuries to her head, leg and hip.

"It was in a rough terrain area, so emergency crews did have to repel in and they used helicopters to hoist her out of the area," Stg. Joel Stranger.

The teen was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Because she is a minor and because the cause of her death is unknown, the case is being handled as a homicide investigation.

Her name was not immediately released.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Detail at (858) 974-2321 or after hours at (858) 565-5200, or contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
