A lifetime of love

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - When Marco met Dorothy he was a graduate student in librarianship at UC Berkeley, attending an orientation meeting. A young faculty member was explaining to the students how to study and get good grades.

"I didn't hear a word she said. I just looked over at her. I looked at her and I thought 'Where did she come from?' It was Dorothy," Marco Thorne said.

Berkeley frowned on faculty dating students, but halfway into the first semester, Marco asked Dorothy for a date.

"She looked me in the eye and said yes," Marco said.

"I thought well he's a nice guy and it's nice to go out with him," Dorothy Thorne said.

Eventually, Marco went into the service. The couple was separated for a year, but then they married in Dayton, Ohio, where Marco was stationed in the officer training school.

"It was the rabbi, Marco and me. That was our wedding," Dorothy said.

That was70 years ago today.

The couple settled in the College Area, where Marco became the city's assistant librarian and photographer. The Thornes raised two children. Today, Marco, age 98, and Dorothy, age 100, are still crazy about each other.

"She's god's gift to everybody," Marco said.

And what do the Thornes think is the secret to a long, successful marriage?

"I would say it's give and take. It's not always peaches and cream, but you know, you go along with it and you enjoy each day for what it is,"

Seventy years later, soul mates still on a journey together, pledging forever a lifetime of love.
