SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diegans who spent three days lost in the San Bernardino mountains are giving News 8 first hand accounts of their ordeal.

News 8's Shannon Handy was there, as they spoke to the congregation at their Oceanside Church Thursday night.

The three men thanked the crowd of more than 100 people for their support, including prayers, which they say helped get them get through a nearly four day ordeal.

"It's because of our family....we're able to stand here with you today," said David Yoder.

Their journey started in the San Bernardino National Forest Saturday morning.

What was supposed to be a 10 hour hike quickly evolved when the trio got lost trying to maneuver around a path covered with snow.

As night set in, the group stayed warm by sleeping side by side and using a banner around their legs.

The inscription on it: Jesus is Lord.

"We used that blue tarp. It trapped the heat."

Eventually, they built a fort. They documented their experience using an iPad.

"We're very tired, scratched up."

After a rescue helicopter failed to see the men on Monday, they decided to move into an open area and build a fire, hoping the helicopter would come back.

It did.

Early Tuesday morning, they were rescued and reunited with their families.

Despite having injuries and a few close calls, these men say, the experience has made them stronger, and in some ways, was meant to be.

"Our faith increased to a level it's never been before," said Ryan Shankles.

The men will share their stories at the Grace Chapel of the Coast on Sunday morning at 9:30. The public is invited to attend.

All three men say they have hiking experience. They were treated for cuts and bruises.
