Poway mom bikes from San Francisco to San Diego

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's an inspirational story just in time for Mother's Day.

A Poway woman is honoring the memory of her daughter by completing a bike ride from San Francisco to San Diego to raise awareness about becoming an organ donor.

In 1998, 14-year-old Brittany Stark died while waiting for a heart transplant. Because Brittany was an organ donor, two San Diegans were given the gift of sight.

On April 29, Brittany's mom Kathleen took off from San Francisco on a bike to spread the word about organ and tissue donation.

On Friday, Kathleen wrapped up her grueling 620-mile bike ride at Rady Children's Hospital, where she works as a bereavement counselor

"I know that there are 33 children here in San Diego that are waiting for that second chance of life. And I'm hoping and praying that they get that chance. And I hope this little effort may have changed the minds of a few people that I got a chance to talk to, that would go on and register and become a hero to someone else," she said.
