Suspicious bag prompts investigation, road closure in National City

Posted: Updated:

NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - The discovery of an unattended bag in front of a Southwestern Community College building Monday prompted an evacuation of the South Bay campus until a bomb squad determined that the satchel contained nothing hazardous.

The carrier was found in a front doorway of the main structure of the school in the 800 block of National City Boulevard about 8:30 a.m., according to police.

Unable to find the owner of the bag, authorities cleared everyone off the campus and closed a stretch of the roadway in front of it while sheriff's explosives technicians were en route, NCPD Sgt. Alex Hernandez said.

The squad used an X-ray device to scan the interior of the sack, determining that it contained books and a bottle of perfume.

Police gave an all-clear about 10:30 a.m., the sergeant said.
