Brush fire burns north of Barona Casino

Posted: Updated:

LAKESIDE (CNS) - A wildfire burned swaths of brushy back country north of Barona Casino Monday afternoon, forcing a road closure but causing no reported structural damage or injuries.

The blaze began spreading near Barona and Featherstone Canyon roads shortly after 3 p.m., driven by gusty winds, according to Cal Fire.

Within an hour, the burn area had grown to about a dozen acres as ground crews and personnel aboard firefighting aircraft worked to subdue the flames, said Battalion Chief Nick Schuler.

The blaze, which may have erupted at a shooting range, prompted the closure of a stretch of Wildcat Canyon Road south of San Vicente Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.

By 4:30 p.m., crews had the fire contained at roughly 15 acres.

The cause was under investigation, Schuler said.
