Crews fix lagoon after mosquito invasion

DEL MAR (CBS 8) - People living near Del Mar will soon have some relief from a pesky mosquito problem.

The Penasquitos Lagoon has been a source of numerous complaints over the past several months.

"With any luck, once that lagoon gets unplugged, it should only be 7-10 days that the mosquitos drop very noticeably."

Work got started doing just that early Monday at the Penasquitos Lagoon.

Bulldozers were brought in to move sand as water gushed out into the ocean during the dredging process.

"We are having the emergency dredging...it would have been better to have done this on the normal schedule."

San Diego City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner has been behind the push to get the state to do something about the mosquito problem here.

For months, nearby residents have voiced their concerns, saying there were just swarms of mosquitos all the time.

"You can't even...even really breathe when they're out. You might inhale some."

Councilwoman Lightner says the work being done Monday won't stop here.

Tuesday, the council is expected to approve a contract, in order for them to keep up with the long term care of the lagoon in a more timely manner.

"I'll be glad when we finally get the maintenance on the channel done," she said.

Dredging was also done Monday at the San Elijo Lagoon near Cardiff By The Sea.
