Controlled burn in Jamul Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

JAMUL (CBS 8) - Smoke may be visible in the East County Wednesday as firefighters conduct a controlled burn in Jamul, a battalion chief said.

The controlled burn is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Highway 94 near Rancho Jamul Drive, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler.

The purpose of the burn is to reduce the amount of brush in the area that could fuel a wildfire, he said, noting it also will serve as a training exercise for firefighters.

Firefighters will also use the burn for training purposes.

"It's a very methodical operation and like I said what we're doing here is like I say just take it slow, building black line so there's a good buffer," said Cal Fire Southern Division Chief Dave Nissen.

Roughly 80 personnel are on the scene Wednesday.

Cal Fire crews also warn that residents should not attempt to conduct controlled burns themselves.
