The Lake Show

Tuesday was not quite as hot around town, but there were still some warm temperatures, but Larry Himmel found one cool spot in the East County at Lake Cuyamaca.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Tuesday was not quite as hot around town, but there were still some warm temperatures, but Larry Himmel found one cool spot in the East County at Lake Cuyamaca.

This is the Microclimate Forecast from Ranger Mike at Lake Cuyamaca:

"Extremely beautiful."

With East County temperatures still hovering above 80, the windblown lake was the spot to be.

But Ranger Charlie will tell you, the weather wasn't the only attraction out here Tuesday:

"Lots of big trout three to seven pounders."

With only a handful of fisherman around, you've got to like your odds on the water.

"Monday through Thursday, you've got the lake to yourself, pretty much," Ranger Charlie continued.

Even with a little chop, Lake Cuyamaca is smooth cruise, a serene, aquamarine glide, surrounded by evergreen mountainside, a great way to spend the day with a couple of buds, a couple of brews and a couple of trout.

That's the Lake Cuyamaca trifecta of fun.

If you like to fish from the banks, you'll probably run into John McDonald who will modestly tell you:

"I'm pretty good. I catch a trout, every now and then."

Truth is, it's only 10:30 a.m. and John has already caught his limit, as he does most days. His secret?

"The night crawler with some power bait on it," he said.

He drives down twice a week from Long Beach.

"I love this area. I've been coming up here for years," John added. "And then too, I meet a lot of nice people."

Tuesday, John was sharing his "hot spot" with Michael, who gets a bite while our camera rolls.

Just a few yards away, Richard and his son from Clairemont are going to try their luck on the lake.

"For other people, it's been great, just got here, so we'll have to go try my luck," Richard noted.

You've to like their chances. After all, it's a beautiful day.

Just one of so many in the rare mountain air of Lake Cuyamaca.
